2020 Update: We're Going Virtual!

Hey everyone! Izzy here - your new Director of 24 Hours of Heroes!

For those who don’t know me well, here’s me in 61 words: I am the daughter of Gordon Hicks - our founder - and Danielle Ferko-Hicks. I am entering my third year of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, and am an aspiring physiotherapist, with a dream of opening my own facility for the rehabilitation of service women and men. Three of my favourite things are doggos, working out, and waffles.

In years past, I have helped out with more behind-the-scenes roles within 24 Hours of Heroes, and doing many of the odd jobs at our in-person events. Maybe you remember buying raffle tickets or merch from me? This year, with the support of the whole 24 Hours of Heroes team, I am beyond thrilled to take on this new role and continue growing this amazing event which has already skyrocketed since its inception in 2016.

With everything that has been going on in the world, we began to reconsider our earlier plans to cancel this year’s 24 Hours of Heroes event. After some hard thinking and collaboration, we decided to bring it back, but make it ‘virtual’! Running November 14th and 15th with 4 hero workouts per day, and connecting via Zoom, we will be able to safely reunite our community to workout in honour and remembrance of our fallen service men and women. With this new ‘virtual’ format, we hope to spread our event and message even further than ever before. Who knows, maybe we can even go coast-to-coast? It is our hope that this year’s event will not only bring some much-needed sweat-induced endorphins to our participants, but also rekindle our connections with one another - and allow us to make some new ones too! At 24 Hours of Heroes, we have always made acknowledging the importance of mental health a priority, especially for the frontline workers and service men and women for whom we workout, and this year has only served to prove that this has even greater importance. Continuing our partnership with Wounded Warriors Canada and National Service Dogs, we are so excited to further spread our message and support veterans and first responders living with PTSD.

With that, here are some more event details!

  • 4 hero workouts each on Saturday November 14th and Sunday November 15th

  • Register and fundraise* through Race Roster in one of two ways:

    • ‘remote’ individual - complete the workout at home, where you will be provided access to various scaling options including a limited equipment/bodyweight version, and have access to the Zoom feed (don’t worry, a coach will still be present on the feed to help you out with any questions!)

    • participant at a satellite gym - complete the workout in your desired gym facility, where you can choose the best scaling option for you with the help of a ‘live’ coach, with gym access to the Zoom feed

    • *Note: top fundraising gym(s) and individual(s) will receive special prizing from our amazing sponsors!

  • At the start of each workout (starting every 75mins to accommodate extra cleaning protocols in gyms), we will review the workout and hero(es), and do a group warm-up all via Zoom before getting to work!

From myself, and the whole 24 Hours of Heroes team: We can’t wait to see you in November.

Love, Izzy
